Frequently asked questions

How can I mount the recorder?

mercuryIR can be directly mounted to any suitable vertical surface, such as interview room walls, removing the need for shelving or desktop space. Alternatively, the unit can be mounted horizontally on a desk or shelf.

All connectors are accessed through a lockable panel and leads can be routed to avoid exposed cable between the recorder and any cable trunking.

How do I know the unit is recording properly?

Before recording

  • An automatic disc check confirms the integrity of each disc and ejects any unsuitable discs.

During recording

  • Signal to noise ratio is constantly monitored and an alert* triggered should recording level fall below pre-set thresholds.
  • Built-in field-effect transistor (FET) microphone failure detection and warning system alerts* if microphones become faulty and/or response is intermittent.
  • On loss of video or audio input the recorder will alert*.
  • Dynamic recording levels for each audio channel are displayed.

After recording

  • Last 10 seconds of the interview is played demonstrating audio and video capture on discs.

*Alert - audible with message on front panel LCD display.

How do I copy recordings onto DVD?

At the recorder; you can burn up to 3 DVDs at the same time in either the same or different file formats to meet your operational requirement.  A few simple keystrokes on the touch panel display are all that’s required to create DVD copies of interviews.

How do I enter data?

Mandatory information about the interview can either be downloaded from the Custody Management System or entered directly via the touch screen. In both cases the information must be confirmed before mercuryIR will start recording.

How do I transcribe a recording?

There are 2 ways to transcribe an interview and both utilise Ultra’s Medirva® integrated transcription and content management/content delivery software.

If you are transcribing from a DVD all you need is a PC with Medirva® Player installed (Medirva® Player is provided free of charge), a sound card, a pair of headphones or loudspeakers, a foot pedal (optional) and a spare USB port for the foot pedal. You play and control the interview files using the foot pedal, keyboard ‘hot buttons’ and/or the mouse.

If you are in a networked environment and are playing a file from the repository you need a PC with Internet Explorer, a sound card, a pair of headphones or loudspeakers, a foot pedal (optional) and a spare USB port for the foot pedal. You play and control the interview files using the foot pedal, keyboard ‘hot buttons’ and/or the mouse.

How long can I record for?

If DVD’s are inserted prior to the start of the interview; a DVD+R will record 2 audio and 2 video inputs for approximately 6 hours.

If no DVDs are inserted you can record 2 audio and 2 video inputs for approximately 24 hours on the internal solid state memory.

If mercuryIR is networked the length of recording is only limited by the size of the storage available on the network.

How are recordings stored long term?

Recording can be stored long term as either DVDs or in the network repository and associated storage.

How are recordings deleted and archived?

Once a recording has been confirmed as successfully burned to DVD the file is deleted from mercuryIR and the DVD is archived and managed in accordance with local practice.

In a networked environment once a recording has been successfully uploaded to the Medirva® repository the file is deleted from mercuryIR and it is archived and managed in accordance with local practice.

How long does the recorder take to start up?

mercuryIR is ready to start work in less than 30 seconds and has been designed for 24/7 mission critical operation. A motion sensor ‘wakes up’ the recorder as soon as someone enters the interview Room.

What happens if the power fails?

An integral, removable, re-chargeable battery, in the form of an Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS), is provided to allow recordings to be preserved by controlled shutdown in the event of power failure.

An audible alarm and warning message on the front panel LCD display will alert the user to mains power failure and the battery status of UPS is checked automatically by mercuryIR.

If power fails at a critical point in an interview the UPS provides up to 5 minutes of recording before automatically commencing DVD finalisation and controlled shutdown.

What happens if a microphone fails during an interview?

During recording mercuryIR continuously monitors the correct function of all the microphone(s) attached as well as measuring audio signal to noise ratios (SNR). If any of these fail or fall below preset limits the unit sounds an audible alarm and a warning message is displayed, alerting you that there is a problem with the recording.

What happens if a camera fails during an interview?

During recording mercuryIR continuously monitors the correct function of all the camera(s) attached. If any of these fail or fall below preset limits the unit sounds an audible alarm and a warning message is displayed.

What DVD format does the recorder use?

mercuryIR is designed for use with DVD+R write-once optical discs for security.  You can  use the same discs for both audio and audio/video interviews.

What is the size, weight and power consumption of the recorder?

mercuryIR’s dimensions are 355mm x 325mm x 155mm, it weighs 8 kg and maximum power consumption is 60W, when recording 2 video channels, with cameras powered from the recorder, and 2 audio channels.

Do I have to connect the recorder to a network?

No, mercuryIR can be used as a standalone recorder in either fixed installations or as a portable device. In either case recordings can be burned directly to DVD or stored internally on the solid state drive for DVD creation at a more convenient time.

Is it easy to use?

After confirming mandatory information about the interview provided via the Custody Management System or entering that data via the touch screen it’s just one button to start recording and another to stop.

Is the system reliable?

mercuryIR is based on the same technology deployed in 24/7 mission critical applications such as Air Traffic Control and Covert Monitoring Post recorders and has a calculated Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) of 18 months.

Is the recording affected if there is a lot of background noise?

During recording mercuryIR continuously monitors the correct function of all the microphone(s) and camera(s) attached as well as measuring audio signal to noise ratios. If any of these fail or falls below preset limits the unit sounds and audible alarm and a warning message is displayed.

Is the system secure?

All the systems elements are fully secure:

  • The recorder, mercuryIR, has a full solid state hard disk encryption system.
  • The repository, Medirva®, has a multi-level hierarchical security structure.
  • The remote access platform, Syntaxis, has been accredited to RESTRICTED for multiple government applications.

Additionally, access by individuals is password protected with a full audit trail at the recorder and the repository levels.
